It’s not unique that in the past decade when a Manchester United player leaves the club, the fanbase longed for their return.
Whether it’s Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo (twice), Ander Herrera or more recently Anthony Elanga have all been missed.
One player who the fanbase may well not have thought they would have missed is Brazilian midfielder Fred.
Manchester United decided that the midfielder was allowed to leave the club as Erik ten Hag seemingly wanted to move on from the pivot that was coined McFred with the Brazilian and Scott McTominay often lining up together.
However, months on, it seems United may well be missing what the lovable Brazilian brought to their midfield.
Fred’s energy
Despite the frustrations with the Brazilian at times, Fred brought an energy into the midfield that United have lacked throughout this season.
The midfielder, alongside Casemiro, was trusted with the responsibility of starting in the games, and, more often than not, he would be just the kind of player United needed to win the games.
He would be everywhere, he would be a nuisance and he wouldn’t allow the opposition a moment’s peace, something that United are severely lacking.
The lack of mobility from Christian Eriksen, despite all the qualities he brings to the side on the ball, is costing the Red Devils dearly.
United’s need for another Fred
As bizarre as this sentence may have sounded during the summer, United need another Fred.
They need someone who won’t stop running for the team and will put his all into every second of wearing the shirt.
Something that should be taken for granted like that has unfortunately become something that isn’t always a given when a player joins the club.
Mason Mount is one man who embodies what United need in their midfield, not only does he bring quality on the ball but he provides the energy and passion off the ball to make him a menace. But it has not worked out well at all so far.
When United inevitably dabble in the transfer market next summer to look for replacements for Casemiro, one who has the passion and energy of the Brazilian is crucial.
Fred, now flourishing at Fenerbahce, has been sorely missed this season.
