Luke Shaw apologises after Manchester United’s 7-0 defeat to Liverpool

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has apologised after the 7-0 thrashing at the hands of rivals Liverpool.

United conceded six goals in the second half after a competitive first 45 minutes. The end result was the club’s worst ever score line against the most bitter rivals.

Shaw was quoted by foreign broadcaster Viaplay, report the Manchester Evening News. He said: “It’s hard to explain this. I think the standards where we have been at, it was nowhere near it.

“I feel embarrassed for the fans and the people who were watching for us. I can only apologise. It’s not going to be easy watching this back. But he [Ten Hag] is going to make us watch it back, and show us what we need to learn from this embarrassment.”

Shaw not up to standard

Luke Shaw has been a consistently strong performer since the World Cup. In the second 45 minutes at Anfield, all the football he has played just caught up with him.

This was the same of every single player out there, who could not match Liverpool’s intensity, lost their individual battles, and stopped playing as a team.

It was the worst possible venue to turn in such a performance, and the players knew it, they just could not stop it.

There was no hiding place out there for the players, who were just overran by a sharper and seemingly more motivated Liverpool.

This game was just one step too far for them, amid the most gruelling of fixture schedules.

Erik ten Hag will have learned a lot about his players about this defeat, and he will do in the coming days from how they respond.

Shaw is a player who might benefit from being taken out of the starting line-up, just as he was earlier in the season after the Brentford loss.

He made individual errors leading to goals, which were uncharacteristic. This isn’t a showing he will want to watch back, but as he says, Erik ten Hag will make them view it, and they will be totally embarrassed.
