Louis van Gaal has been placed on the receiving end of a scathing criticism from one of his former Manchester United players at Old Trafford.
The 73-year-old Dutchman arrived in the Old Trafford dugout in 2014 after he left the Netherlands national team and succeeded David Moyes at Manchester United.
Louis van Gaal saw success in his debut season with United, with the former Netherlands boss leading the Red Devils to a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Despite securing Champions League football for the 2015-16 campaign, Van Gaal saw United finish outside of the Premier League top four in his second season.
However, the ex-Bayern Munich, Netherlands and Ajax boss was able to capture the FA Cup trophy in 2016 after a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at Wembley.
United’s failure to return to the Champions League for the 2016-17 season and fifth-place league finish resulted in Van Gaal’s dismissal from the Premier League club.
Van Gaal, who successfully underwent treatment for his prostate cancer in 2022, went on to manage the Netherlands for a third spell after his time with United.

Van Gaal slammed by ex-Man Utd player
Louis van Gaal’s first summer transfer window at Manchester United saw the arrival of Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid in a blockbuster transfer in 2014.
United broke the British record transfer fee at the time to bring Angel Di Maria to Old Trafford, with the Red Devils agreeing a deal worth £59.7m to sign the player.
Di Maria impressed in his start to life at United and the Argentine attacker scored once and registered an assist in three of his first four matches at the club.
However, the 36-year-old former Real Madrid star’s spell was hit with injuries in his only season at Old Trafford and he struggled to settle into life in Manchester.
Di Maria was also frustrated with being played in different positions under Van Gaal, who deployed the Benfica player as a central midfield and as a striker at times.
The 2022 World Cup winner left Old Trafford in 2015 and completed a move to French side Paris Saint-Germain for a fee believed to be £44.3m.
Speaking to ESPN Argentina, Di Maria had no love lost for Van Gaal and called the former United boss the “worst” manager in his entire playing career.
“The worst [manager] is Van Gaal, you can be sure of that,” he said.
“In case you had any doubt, I’ll clear that up for you right now.”
Van Gaal ‘ended’ Di Maria feud before
Van Gaal previously played down Di Maria’s criticism of him after the former Argentina international was critical of him.
Speaking ahead of the Netherlands’ World Cup quarter-final clash against Argentina, Van Gaal said it was “sad” to hear Di Maria call him the worst manager he had.
Responding to Di Maria’s previous comments, Van Gaal said in 2022: “Di Maria calling me the worst manager he has ever had?
“He’s one of the few players with this opinion. I’m really sorry about this and I find it sad he said this.”
