Loan boss says he is looking for best way to utilise Amad at Sunderland

Manchester United whizkid Amad earned the praises of Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray at the weekend, who lauded him in his post-game interview as ‘amazing’.

Now the manager wants to maximise his potential even more, admitting that he is still struggling to find the right tactical set up for his team.

Amad is one of two wingers Sunderland want to start regularly, along with former Celtic and Manchester City talent Patrick Roberts.

Quoted by The Chronicle, Mowbray complimented Amad’s talents and explained he is still working on finding his best XI.

Finding the best way to utilise Amad

Mowbray was speaking ahead of Sunderland’s Championship fixture away at Huddersfield Town tonight.

He said: “I have to find a way to get them both in the team because they can both damage the opposition. Both bring different qualities.

“Amad is pretty dynamic and explosive and fast, while Patrick is so jinky and clever. Down one side of the pitch, the two of them, with the right kind of defender behind them would be pretty formidable.

“I wouldn’t want to be a left-back or a left centre-half in the team playing against them! We’ll try and work out that conundrum.”

His challenge is that in selecting two dangerous attacking wingers, he needs to find the right balance with the rest of the team, so that they are not left too open at the back.

Sunderland sit 16th out of 24, with their team loaded up with high potential but unproven players like Amad, including former Tottenham talent Jack Clarke, and Everton loan striker Ellis Simms.

Amad, 20, has scored one goal for Sunderland this season in 10 appearances.

It is just over two years since his move to Manchester United was agreed, and this is his second loan spell after a stint at Rangers earlier this year.

United are prepared to be patient with his development, he’s clearly talented, but needs to mature as a player during his season on loan in the Championship.

Tonight will be a reality check for him as he lines up away at Huddersfield while Manchester United visit Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

He was a second half substitute when United beat Sociedad in the Europa League in 2021. He must use this as motivation to start pushing on.

If his manager at Sunderland can find the right balance in the team tactically, putting the right players around him, then Amad will have a better chance of succeeding.
