David de Gea is the man of the moment after a record equalling performance at the weekend.

The Spaniard matched Peter Schmeichel on 180 clean sheets for Manchester United in the 3-0 win over Leicester.

He did it the hard way too with a remarkable diving save, denying Kelechi Iheanacho, and saved another earlier effort from Harvey Barnes.

Erik ten Hag said after the game via the club website: “It was only [due to] David De Gea that we kept the clean sheet.”

De Gea praise

Former United star Peter Schmeichel lauded De Gea’s performance, commenting on Twitter:

“The 180th clean sheet was hard earned, but well deserved with two out of this world saves.

“Well done @D_DeGea, many congratulations, what a fantastic achievement.

Former United striker Berbatov posted a video on Instagram stories giving his view of De Gea too.

He said: “De Gea is irreplaceable. These two saves today [were] 100 per cent goal and he was there like Spiderman, guarding the goal and not letting the opposition score.

“He is unbelievable at the moment and then the score stay nil-nil, it is more easy for the whole team to play.”

De Gea is giving Manchester United extra reason to extend his contract. At present, his deal is set to expire at the end of the season.

The Spaniard’s all-round game may fall behind others in terms of passing or claiming crosses, but when it comes to saving shots, he is one of the very best.

De Gea did not dwell on the record with his post-match message on Instagram, writing simply: “The hard work continues game after game.”

Bruno Fernandes responded by writing: “That’s why you are at this level for so many years 👏🏼”, while former teammate Rio Ferdinand wrote simply: “Wow🔥”
