Manchester United continue to be linked with centre-backs. In recent days it is Kalidou Koulibaly and Lewis Dunk.
The Sun report United have made Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly the club’s top target.
Figures of £80 million have been discussed, and this may not even be enough.
Meanwhile The Express claim United are keen on Brighton and Hove Albion’s Lewis Dunk.
One looks like a Jose Mourinho target, the other does not.
Dunk is a talented defender and has played well for Brighton since their promotion to the Premier League.
He has recently been called into the England squad, and signing him may even be preferable to spending too much on Harry Maguire.
Yet when it comes to Koulibaly vs Dunk, there really is no contest, the Napoli man wins all day.
Koulibaly is more athletic, better in the air, and is used to playing in big games, a regular in the Champions League and at the top of Serie A.
United’s defence has been terrible this season. No team in the Premier League’s top 14 positions has conceded more. It’s not good enough.
Koulibaly is the solution. If that means paying three times as much, United must do it.
Especially after CEO Ed Woodward’s typically confident comments about the club’s finances last week. There’s no excuse for taking the cheap option.
