Kobbie Mainoo spotted in Man Utd training without his No.37 squad number

Kobbie Mainoo had already started making his number 37 iconic in his debut season at Old Trafford.

The 2023/24 season – as bad as it was at times – will always be remembered fondly by Manchester United as it brought the arrival of Kobbie Mainoo with it.

The 19-year-old midfielder was stellar in his opening season and instantly established himself as a starter in Erik ten Hag’s squad.

He was so good that Gareth Southgate could not resist the chance to call him up into his Euro 2024 squad – where he was also impressive when called upon.

But now there might have been a hint that he is in line for a number upgrade this summer after photos of him in training were unveiled.

Kobbie Mainoo spotted without a squad number

With all the United players back in training now at Carrington, only two were number-less in training.

The first was Joshua Zirkzee, but he was then awarded the number 11 shirt after training on Monday which left just Mainoo without a squad number on his training gear.

Mainoo not having a squad number could mean plenty of things – however, one possibility is that he is set to be handed a new number more befitting an important player for the team.

If he is in line for a new number, we won’t have to wait long as it is all likely to be confirmed by Saturday’s Community Shield against Man City – which we imagine United will want Mainoo to play in.

What number could Mainoo swap to at United?

For Mainoo, moving numbers will repeat what Alejandro Garnacho experienced last summer when he was handed the number 17.

However, there are not any standout options available for Mainoo at the moment, with typical midfielder numbers such as six, eight and 10 already claimed by more senior players.

One potential option for Mainoo could be 19 – while 18 and 14 could also be good choices but require players to first be sold.

We are not sure if Mainoo will get a new number – but it looks like a serious possibility as often no training squad number can mean that this is the case.
