Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo showed his true class after he dropped a wholesome response to one fan’s heartbreaking story involving his father.
Kobbie Mainoo, who was praised by one club legend, played a starring role for Manchester United last week in the thrilling 4-3 Premier League away win against Wolves.
The 18-year-old midfielder found the back of the net for the first time in the Premier League, with Mainoo snatching a late winner for the Red Devils in injury time at the Molineux.
The Stockport-born player has had a remarkable season so far, having scored for the first time for United’s senior team in the 4-2 away win against Newport County in the FA Cup.
Erik ten Hag has hailed Mainoo’s impressive emergence in the United first team and showered praise on the England Under-19s international’s mindset at the club.
Man Utd fan’s message to Mainoo
One Manchester United fan, Daniel Killeen, took to social media to share a heartfelt – and tragic – story about his Red Devils-supporting father, Vincent Killeen.
Daniel posted on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that his father passed away on Sunday after losing his “brave battle” with cancer.
The United supporter shared a photo from his father’s hospital room and how the pair were able to watch the Red Devils’ sensational win over Wolves together.
Daniel recalled his late father’s reaction when Kobbie Mainoo stole the show with his dramatic injury-time winner, saying Vincent had his “arm in the air” and “a smile on his face.”
“Sadly, my father (Vincent Killeen) lost his brave battle against cancer yesterday,” he wrote on X.
“The last game we watched together was the Wolves game, just the two of us in his hospital room.
“When Wolves equalised, we were both so frustrated. I have never willed United to score more than that moment and then Kobbie Mainoo steps up with an amazing winner.
“Seeing Dad’s arm in the air, a smile on his face and declaring, ‘That’s why you watch United.’
“When he saw that you were doing an interview, he insisted that I stay so he could listen.
“I know football should be about winning trophies, but you will never score a more important goal for our family, Kobbie.
“You are already a hero in our household and you are now my 7-year-old’s favourite player.
“Thank you for a truly brilliant and special moment. I am sure your career will bring many of them.”
Mainoo responds to Man Utd fan
United’s official X account reacted to the viral tweet and posted a response from Mainoo, who invited Daniel and his son to Old Trafford for a match.
Speaking in the video, Mainoo responded “Hi, Daniel, Kobbie here. I saw your message on Twitter and was really touched by your story.
“I’m really sorry about the passing of your father. I’m glad you could share such a special moment together, and I could play a small part in that.
“I wanted to invite you and your son to a game soon at Old Trafford. So, we’ll get in touch and get everything sorted. Stay strong and I’ll see you soon.”
Daniel has since reacted to United’s post and said his father would have been “completely overwhelmed by the response.”
“To all of the United fans, people in the media and fans of other clubs who have sent so many messages of support over the past 24 hours,” he wrote.
“The family would like to say a massive thank you for all of the kind words.
“My dad would have been completely overwhelmed by the response and seeing so many kind and loving words from you all.
“And I don’t think he would have been able to get [in] his head a post from a club legend like [Rio Ferdinand], so thank you for that, Rio.
“I sat earlier and showed my boy the thousands of wonderful messages that have been received so far and he truly was amazed by it all.
“We are all truly humbled. Football has so many amazing fans and we can say that there are no better than Manchester United.
“Thank you so much for everything.”
