Jurrien Timber considering delaying Manchester United transfer to January due to World Cup fears
Has Louis van Gaal’s harsh stance on Donny van de Beek spooked Jurrien Timber off a Manchester United move this summer?
Van de Beek has not been selected in a Netherlands squad all season, reflective of a failure to hold down a role at United.
Now it is claimed by The Mirror that Jurrien Timber is hesitant over a move to Manchester United due to fears over his World Cup chances.
The Guardian reported this week that initial talks had been opened over a move for Timber, who is valued at £43 million.
Timber considering delaying
Timber is said to be concerned that moving to United might not see him command an instant starting role straight away.
He would have to compete with Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof at centre-back, although could also be utilised at right-back.
Van Gaal has shown that players who are not featuring for their clubs will not be picked for his squad, and Timber recognises a move to Old Trafford could be a gamble.
The Mirror report a compromise could be reached, with Timber considering delaying a move until the January transfer window.
It’s unclear what form this could take, whether both parties walk away this summer, or an agreement is struck, which sees Timber remain at Ajax on loan before January.
There will be 16 Premier League games before the World Cup, with the following 22 taking place afterwards.
While this is an option, and Timber’s concerns are justified, the presence of his former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford may be able to sway him.
Ten Hag handed him his debut at Ajax, and picked him to start more than 30 games in all competitions this past season for the club. He also named him Ajax talent of the year.
If the manager tells Timber he wants him and sees a starting role straight away, Timber should take what he is saying at face value and be bold to make the move right away.
Speaking about a potential move earlier this week, Timber appeared caught in two minds, and in no rush.
He told De Telegraaf: “You can go to a big club. But if you’re not going to play there, it’s better to stay at Ajax.
“And Ajax is also a big club. We play football in the Champions League and I play there with the best players from The Netherlands. That’s not nothing.”
