Former Manchester United and Chelsea star Juan Mata has dropped the ultimate compliment on one key first-team Red Devils player at Old Trafford.

Juan Mata’s run at Old Trafford came to an end in 2022 after the 38-year-old Spaniard’s contract with Manchester United expired.

The World Cup winner, who arrived at Man Utd during David Moyes’ ill-fated reign, lifted a Europa League trophy, an FA Cup and a League Cup with the Red Devils.

Mata played for the likes of Galatasaray, Vissel Kobe and Western Sydney Wanderers post-United before settling at current club Melbourne Victory in 2025.

Juan Mata’s praise for former Man Utd teammate Bruno Fernandes speaks volumes right now

Before he left Old Trafford, Juan Mata was still at Manchester United when the Red Devils signed Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes from Sporting CP in 2020.

The former Chelsea and Man Utd player witnessed first-hand the brilliance of Bruno Fernandes, who has become a linchpin figure in the Old Trafford dressing room.

Fernandes, who is regarded as United’s best signing post-Sir Alex Ferguson, superbly ended last season by breaking the Premier League assist record.

Speaking to ITV Sport during the 2026 World Cup in North America, Melbourne Victory’s Mata showed his full admiration for ex-Sporting CP midfielder Fernandes.

“My favourite player to watch now is Bruno Fernandes,” he said.

Bruno Fernandes’ influence is finally felt at the 2026 World Cup during Portugal’s campaign

Bruno Fernandes is one of the many United first-team players who are currently away from Old Trafford for this summer’s World Cup tournament.

The 31-year-old United captain is a key player for Portugal and has played the full 90 minutes in his country’s Group K openers against DR Congo and Uzbekistan.

While Fernandes struggled to make a real impact in the 1-1 draw against DR Congo, the Portuguese midfielder did pick up an assist in the 5-0 demolition of Uzbekistan.

Former Red Devils superstar Cristiano Ronaldo also made his presence felt at the World Cup after he scored a first-half brace against Uzbekistan on Tuesday.
