Manchester United youngster Chido Obi made his first team debut for the Red Devils.

Even amid a defeat to Tottenham, there was one positive takeaway from the game, with 17-year-old striker Chido Obi making his debut for the club.

Obi became Manchester United’s 252nd academy graduate, coming off the bench in stoppage time during the loss.

He has earned his opportunity with a series of impressive academy performances, netting 15 goals already for United’s youth teams this season.

His decision to quit Arsenal has been justified, making his Premier League debut already. And the hope is this is just the start, with United in desperate need of a goalscorer.

Chido Obi message

Chido Obi was delighted to make his professional debut, even if it it came in a defeat for Ruben Amorim’s side.

He posted a message on Instagram, writing: “Disappointed with the loss😤 on a personal note thanks to the gaffer & the club for making a dream come true for me and my family.”

The most exciting element for Chido was laid out by teammate Joshua Zirkzee, who wrote, ‘More to come lil bro,” showing his support for the teenager.

There were also replies from new signing Ayden Heaven, who Obi used to play alongside at Arsenal’s academy, and United youngster Toby Collyer.

Joshua Zirkzee and Chido Obi could play together

Chido Obi is being elevated to Manchester United’s first team for two reasons. One is his sensational performances, which saw him scored seven goals in three FA Youth Cup game.

Another is the poor performances United’s forwards have been serving up. Joshua Zirkzee’s last Premier League goal was back in December, right at the start, while Rasmus Hojlund’s was in October.

Obi may not necessarily be replacing Zirkzee either. Ruben Amorim deployed the Dutch international in an attacking midfield role against Tottenham.

Zirkzee was praised as a ‘bright spark’, while Amorim also commented positively on his performance. It’s very possible both Zirkzee and Obi are in the starting line-up before the end of the month.
