Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was baffled by a “comment” that Ruben Amorim made about Manchester United in the aftermath of the Brighton defeat on Sunday.
Manchester United languish in 13th place in the Premier League table after winning only seven of their 22 league matches in the 2024-25 campaign.
Ruben Amorim’s men suffered their first loss of 2025, with Brighton arriving at Old Trafford and securing a 3-1 Premier League win on the weekend.
Brighton took the early lead through Yankuba Minteh before United hit back and pulled level thanks to Bruno Fernandes successfully converting from the spot-kick.
United played out a 1-1 scoreline up to half-time before the Red Devils unravelled in the second half, with Kaoru Mitoma scoring Brighton’s second of the match.
The Seagulls endured all three Premier League points on Sunday afternoon after Georginio Rutter pounced on an Andre Onana howler and netted Brighton’s third.

Carragher raises eyebrow at Amorim’s remarks
Manchester United are only 10 points clear of the relegation zone and the Red Devils’ hopes of securing a top-four challenge are all but over.
The Red Devils are 14 points adrift from fourth-place Chelsea and Ruben Amorim’s side have struggled to deliver consistent results since his arrival at Old Trafford.
Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag as United manager in 2024, pulled no punches towards the Red Devils with his scathing remarks after the Brighton match.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was stunned by Amorim’s admission and said his words would ‘follow him’ for the “rest of the season.”
He could not understand why Amorim was giving reporters a “headline,” which was the exact opposite approach Sir Alex Ferguson took as United manager.
“I don’t know Man Utd’s history as well as Gary Neville but I must say it was one of the most bizarre and ridiculous things I’ve ever heard a manager say,” Carragher said, as per Goal.
“Why you would make a comment like that… that’s the type of comment a pundit would make, someone in my position, and you’d have to defend that.
“I don’t know what he gains from that, what the benefit is. We all know it’s a poor Man Utd team.
“They’d lost another game at home to Brighton, they’d done that in the last couple of years anyway. We know it’s a tough season, we know it’s a poor team. He has just loosened it up.
“That will be a quote that follows him for the rest of the season. He said to the journalists there: ‘I’ll give you your headline.’ Why you would like to do that as a manager, I’ll never know.”
What did Amorim say in his Man Utd comments?
Following United’s 3-1 defeat, Amorim did not mince his words and he suggested that the current Red Devils side might be the “worst team” in the club’s history.
“I am not naive,” he told reporters at his press conference.
“We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. We have to acknowledge that and change that.
“In 10 games in the Premier League, we won three, I know that. Imagine this for a fan of Man United, imagine this for me.
“You are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. Imagine that. We need to survive this moment. I know that.”
