Sky Sports pundit makes radical Bruno Fernandes claim, tells Manchester United how to get better, and he’s wrong

Jamie Carragher has singled out one Manchester United star who should be offloaded despite being one of Ruben Amorim’s most influential players.

The former Liverpool defender is rarely stuck for words when it comes to Manchester United.

As a journalist with a keen eye for whatever is said about United in the media, Carragher’s name regularly pops up, even though most Reds take his word with a pinch of salt.

It’s glaringly obvious that Carragher doesn’t put the same energy into his punditry when commenting on other teams.

Of course, United’s slow start to the season only gives ammunition to the likes of Carragher. Erik ten Hag has been sacked, and United’s first team is stranded in 14th in the Premier League table with doubts growing over there being no Champions League football again next season.

Ruben Amorim succeeded Ten Hag at Old Trafford and has had a mixed start to his stint in charge. There has been lows after losing to Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, but highs from wins in the Europa League against Bodo/Glimt and Viktoria Plzen.

United’s new head coach will want to put his stamp on the team over the coming transfer windows, although the club is doubtful to be big spenders in January. That means Amorim may need to wait until the summer to get some players in.

Jamie Carragher drops Bruno Fernandes dilemma

Eager to stick the knife in at any opportunity, Carragher has turned his attention towards hammering Bruno Fernandes.

The Portugal international signed a new contract at United in August, extending his stay until 2027, with the option of an additional year.

But former Liverpool captain Carragher believes United have a decision to make on the future of Fernandes.

In a column for The Telegraph, Carragher writes about United’s need to consider selling one of their best servants.

He said: “A dilemma also looms with Bruno Fernandes. Unlike [Marcus] Rashford, Fernandes has been one of United’s best players during a tough period and would have shone with more quality around him during his Old Trafford career.

“But he is 30 now and there may be value in offloading him to raise funds. I’ve always felt Fernandes is a great talent rather than a great player. He creates a lot of chances but can be very indisciplined with and without the ball.

“’That makes it a lot harder for United to defend as a compact unit as he chases the ball all over the pitch. It looks like great commitment to the supporters but the manager will be tearing his hair out.”

Selling Bruno Fernandes would be a mistake

Fernandes switched Sporting CP for United in 2020.

Since then, Fernandes has proved to be United’s most influential player, even when his form dips from time to time.

Regardless of what Carragher thinks, stats like those are only produced by great players.

Below-par performances are never due to a lack of effort because the 30-year-old never stops trying to help his team-mates, which is why it would be a mistake to sell the Portuguese Magnificio.

Fernandes remains one of United’s most prolific players.

On Thursday night, Fernandes had his best performance yet under Amorim as United beat Plzen 2-1 are coming from behind. He played an important role in midfield after starting alongside Casemiro.
