It’s looking serious Scott McTominay could leave Manchester United this summer

Scott McTominay‘s difficult season at Manchester United suffered a blow when he was substituted 58 minutes into the win over Fulham.

United were trailing 1-0 at the time, and after a tactical re-shuffle, Antony came on and inspired a 3-1 victory.

This was Scott McTominay’s first start since the win over West Ham at the start of March – when he was substituted off at half-time.

McTominay’s last start before this was the defeat to Arsenal when Casemiro was suspended – his first Premier League start since September 4.

Speculation linking Scott McTominay with an exit re-emerged this week. It is expected to heighten heading into the summer window.

The Telegraph report Newcastle are very interested in signing McTominay and have already planned how he will fit into their side.

Newcastle were linked last summer and in January, when a deal was not viable. In the summer, Manchester United are unlikely to stand in McTominay’s way.

The report also adds: “McTominay is believed to be open to the idea of moving to the North East and impressed by the vast strides the team have made this season.”

McTominay has 202 appearances for Manchester United but there is a sense he needs to move on. The Telegraph reports his experience of European football is attractive to Newcastle.

Between now and the end of the season, Manchester United will still need McTominay to play a role, even if he is well down the queue.

This season he has played a total of 1,388 minutes. Last season he played 3,001 minutes for Manchester United.

New loan signing Marcel Sabitzer appears to have overtaken him in the pecking order, and with Christian Eriksen closing in on a return, there is going to be even less of a role for McTominay.

United also have Kobbie Mainoo pushing to come through, while midfield is a position where the club are expected to strengthen in the summer, even if Jude Bellingham is not possible.

Like Harry Maguire, who has also been phased out slowly under Erik ten Hag, McTominay is going to need to move on for his own sake.
