Mercedes look poised to dominate the new Formula 1 season and that is fantastic news for Manchester United under Ineos.
When Sir Jim Ratcliffe invested in Manchester United just over two years ago, it meant that the Red Devils joined the umbrella of Ineos’ sports network.
United are now part of a multi-club network with Ineos-owned Nice and FC Lausanne, and there has been some collaboration between those clubs in terms of loan deals and data sharing.
Ineos also own a 33.33% stake in Mercedes F1 team, and United have hired Mercedes staff to overhaul their usage of data at Old Trafford. The latest result in the world of Formula 1 spells good news for United and Ineos.

Mercedes are thriving under Ineos ownership
It was announced in late 2020 that Ratcliffe’s Ineos were purchasing an equal stake of 33.33% in the Mercedes F1 team, making him a co-owner alongside team principal Toto Wolff.
United and Mercedes are connected through sponsorship as well as through ownership, and the two sporting giants have collaborated, including Ruben Amorim’s presence at the F1 last season.
In the opening race of the 2026 F1 season, Ineos-backed Mercedes finished in 1st and 2nd with drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli dominating in Melbourne, Australia.
United hired Michael Sansoni from the Mercedes F1 team to overhaul the data systems at Old Trafford, and their motorsport success is a good omen that United are on the right track.
Considering how important data is in the world of Formula 1, United are now bringing that expertise over to Old Trafford, and clearly they have the best in class.
After a dramatic start to 2026, what is your message to Sir Jim Ratcliffe?
Man United’s use of data is hugely improved under Ineos
Since Ratcliffe took charge, the British billionaire immediately pointed out that the Red Devils need to improve their usage of data, hence the appointment of Sansoni.
Recent reports suggest United’s data is now among the best in the Premier League. Data can be used to help guide training methods, transfer targets and even appointing a new head coach in the summer.
In a short amount of time, it seems Sansoni has modernised United’s data department, and the results are already showing.
Ineos have drastically improved United’s transfer record. The summer window in 2025 will be remembered fondly with Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens all having a positive impact in their debut campaigns.
