How the national media reacted to ex-Man Utd whizkid Angel Gomes’ performance for England vs Finland

Letting Angel Gomes leave on a free transfer in 2020 was a regrettable loss for all concerned at Manchester United.

Manchester United wanted to keep Angel Gomes at the club, but were unable to offer a clear path to first team football, and the youngster elected to take his chances elsewhere.

Angel Gomes’ decision has proven a smart one, recently called into the England squad under interim boss Lee Carsley, and beginning to establish himself.

Gomes is thriving in a more withdrawn midfield role, and in his most recent international match for England against Finland he was very effective.

Angel Gomes was named as a starter as England won 3-1 against Finland in the UEFA Nations League.

Gomes played 80 minutes, substituted with England 2-0 up, having provided an assist for the first goal, scored by Jack Grealish.

Reaction to Gomes performance

The national media gave a unanimously positive verdict on Angel Gomes’ performance, pointing out his contribution to England’s win.

The Independent gave him a 7/10: “Recovered from a sloppy pass early on to provide a wonderful assist for Grealish, with a sharp turn on the edge of the box. Shouldn’t have been dropped against Greece and this showed why. Offers what England often lack.”

The Telegraph also awarded a 7/10, writing: “Lovely assist when he slipped ball behind Finland’s defence for the opener,” with the Evening Standard agreeing on the same rating, adding: “Really good performance.”

The Sun gave Gomes a 8/10, lauding the former United talent as ‘the big success story of the Carsley era’.

Gomes has admitted it would be tough to say no to a return to Manchester United next summer, when his contract at Lille expires.

United hold an interest in bringing Gomes back, and his form is showing why he would be an astute replacement for Christian Eriksen.
