Once a favourite among Manchester United fans, Alejandro Garnacho’s fall from grace has been rapid.
Alejandro Garnacho endured a humiliating return to Old Trafford with Chelsea this past weekend, with his side falling to a 2-1 defeat.
Garnacho failed to even get off the bench, unable to try and influence the matchup, not called upon despite Enzo Maresca making five substitutions.
Manchester United sold Garnacho to Chelsea for £40 million in the summer, after he fell out of favour with Ruben Amorim.
Garnacho rejected a move abroad because he wanted to sign for Chelsea. His actions on social media over the past year contributed to United fans falling out of love with him, and supporters let him know when he returned to Old Trafford.
Fans repurposed an old ‘anti-Carlos Tevez’ chant to hurl insults towards fellow Argentine Garnacho, making their displeasure clear.

How Argentina reacted to Garnacho’s return
Alejandro Garnacho’s career has been followed closely in Argentina ever since he made the decision to represent the country, going on to earn senior caps while playing for Manchester United.
Garnacho’s unhappy return to Old Trafford made major news in the national press in Argentina, with multiple outlets reporting on his brutal welcome.
El Grafico wrote: “The reception he received from those who had once celebrated his runs and dribbles was absolutely hostile. Some very hurtful chants were heard.”
La Nueva noted how Garnacho “tried to go unnoticed with a jacket and hoodie, but he couldn’t avoid the rebuke”.
MDZ online reported how Garnacho’s simply being there fuelled the raucous home atmosphere: “His mere presence in the stadium already mobilized the home fans.
“The same people who months ago considered him one of their favorite players on the squad and chanted his name when he scored goals have now definitively let go and greeted him with hostility and a harsh chant against him.”
Diario Uno hit out at the abuse hurled at Garnacho, writing: “He became the center of attention as he was consistently harassed, receiving extremely serious insults.”
