Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford was sent off in the team’s 4-3 defeat to Copenhagen.
The sending off has been a huge talking point, with opinion split on the decision. It happened in the first half of Manchester United’s defeat to Copenhagen, turning the game.
Manchester United were 2-0 up before the red card, which came after VAR recommended a seemingly innocuous incident be reviewed.
Marcus Rashford was judged to have endangered opponent Elias Jelert, who agreed it was a red card, and the Manchester United forward was given a straight red.

Marcus Rashford red card history
It was a rarity for Marcus Rashford to receive a red card. This was the second red card of his professional career, which has spanned 374 club appearances and 57 for England.
Rashford’s one previous red card came back when Jose Mourinho was manager, back in September 2018, now more than five years ago.
He was sent off following an altercation with former United trainee Phil Bardsley in Manchester United’s 1-0 away win over Burnley in the Premier League clash.
He had squared up to his opponent and was shown a straight red by referee John Moss.
Rashford wrote on social media, per the club website: “Emotions got the better of me, I shouldn’t have reacted like that. Sorry to everyone at the club and all the fans. #MUFC.”
This has not repeated since. Rashford has always been able to keep his emotions in check and the midweek red card was a totally different incident, an accidental clash where he went over the top of the ball and caught his opponent above the ankle.
Two red cards across his career is not bad at all, and it the view of many, last night’s sending off should never have been given.
Opinions split on Marcus Rashford red
TNT Sport commentator Robbie Savage said the incident was a 100 per cent red card for the Manchester United forward.
There was a strong disagreement in the MUTV studio, with Dion Dublin stating he viewed it as a yellow card at the most.
Former United prospect Danny Simpson added on X: “Not a red. He has to protect the ball and doesn’t even look at them man once. I am tired of this new game.”
