Manchester United are keeping a very close eye on their cross-city rivals and the verdict of their 115 charges.
Manchester City face 115 charges of breaching the Premier League’s financial rules and a verdict is expected in early 2025 after an independent commission hearing started in September.
It has been suggested that City could face a major points deduction or even relegation if found guilty of the majority of their charges.
Parallel to their 115 charges, City have been warring with the Premier League over what they deem to be “unlawful” financial rules with City claiming financial disadvantage compared to United.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe commented on City’s legal battle, which was focused around sponsorship rules in the Premier League.
If City are found guilty early next year, United could be in line for a big payout.
Man United want compensation if Man City are guilty
With City’s hearing ongoing, United are one of four Premier League teams that have taken legal action to ensure they can claim compensation.
According to the Daily Mail, United are joined by Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool in wanting financial compensation if City are guilty of their 115 charges.
United could claim for loss of income due to City’s actions if they are guilty. They could argue that missing out on Premier League prize money and European qualification affected revenue streams.
According to the report, those sums “could potentially run into the hundreds of millions”.
The report confirms that a verdict from City’s hearing is expected in early 2025.

During the period that they have been charged for breaching financial rules, City won six Premier League titles.

If City were retrospectively stripped of their titles – which has happened after other scandals across Europe – United could potentially be looking at three new Premier League medals.

The Red Devils finished second to their arch-rivals in 2011/12, 2017/18 and 2020/21.
Liverpool would also be looking at adding three league titles to their collection after finishing second in the other three seasons.
