Bruno Fernandes’ captained Manchester United as club captain for the first time, but took the time to speak out on Harry Maguire’s struggles.

United’s number eight scored the opening goal with a thunderous strike from range which couldn’t be stopped by an Aaron Ramsdale hand.

He performed expertly as he led from the front as usual and combined well multiple times with his midfield colleagues.

He even was called upon at one stage to calm down a frantic Erik ten Hag who was giving an official an earful following a poor decision.

The Portuguese star has always been United’s captain, only now it is official in title.

Fernandes speaks on Maguire

Speaking on MUTV post-game, Bruno discussed the position ex-captain Maguire finds himself in currently.

He said: “He congratulated me [on being elected new United captain] and he said he is really happy for me,

“I understand his position is not the best at the moment. It has to be difficult for him but he had a great [moment] with me.”

This will be welcome news to many who would hope the centre-back wouldn’t take it personally and crack on with the job at hand.

Bruno on his performance

Bruno was also asked about his performance and his thoughts on returning to action with a goal.

“It’s always important to score. It’s always important for your confidence. I’m really happy. The result was the best thing of today.”

A goal immediately on his pre-season return with obviously be a massive boost for our magician.

However, the win over a Premier League rivals and a side we are expecting to be challenging this season, is even better.
