Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has turned it all around with strong recent form.

It is a sign of Harry Maguire‘s progress in recent weeks that he was called offside for a late equalising goal, and end the match with praise and not criticism.

Early in the season, this type of incident would have been seized upon by his detractors for costing the team points.

Now, it is reflective of him at least trying to positively influence the game and grab a point for his team, with nobody else putting in a good, honest shift.

Harry Maguire praised after loss

Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw performed well in central defence, and were seen as the only positives to come out of the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle.

This was yet another away defeat against a top half team for Manchester United, who have never beaten a side away who are ranked inside the Premier League’s top eight, under Erik ten Hag.

Harry Maguire was booked for a challenge in the second half, where he at least showed a bit of fight, trying to rally his team.

The defender was praised by Danny Simpson on MUTV, who commended Harry Maguire’s performance and attitude.

He said: “You can see there it’s hurting him, it means a lot to him, he wants to win, listen. He loves the club.

“I’m glad for him that he’s performing well and the fans are beginning to see that. He does care.”

Another ex-United academy prospect Paul Woolston told MUTV: “He gets booked because he’s frustrated at how the team played. He knows others can be miles better than what they did.

“It was a good strong performance from him, crucial blocks, interceptions, being in the right place at the right time. He’s played well but they’ve got beat.”

Manchester United need more players with Maguire’s resolve

Whether Maguire truly loves the club or not, the way he plays at times, you can believe it. The same can’t be said of many of his teammates.

United’s players were heavily criticised for poor attitudes in the defeat to Newcastle, but that accusation is not one that can be levelled at Maguire.

He may no longer have the captain’s armband, but is playing like a leader, setting a positive example, which the rest of his teammates need to follow.
