Harry Maguire took a step closer to hero status among Manchester United fans by scoring the winning goal against Liverpool at Anfield.
Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-1 on Sunday afternoon to end a nine-year streak of poor results on Merseyside.
Bryan Mbeumo scored within two minutes to give the Red Devils an early lead, before Cody Gakpo drew the hosts level. Six minutes later, though, Harry Maguire connected with Bruno Fernandes’ incredible cross to head in the winner.
Maguire silenced his critics and avenged his miss from last season where he could have stolen all three points for United.
It felt like a monumental moment for Ruben Amorim and his players, but Maguire was quick to point out that it might have been his final trip to Anfield in United colours.

Harry Maguire makes play for new Man United contract
Maguire is one of several United stars in the final year of their contracts, meaning he is set to be released at the end of the season.
However, there were reports before the international break that Maguire is in talks for a new deal.
After full-time at Anfield, Maguire seemed to remind United chiefs that he is yet to extend his deal.
As quoted by The Independent, Maguire said: “I’ve been here seven years now, so it’s been tough not getting that win.
“It’s been on my mind a little bit. I’m in my last year now, so this could be the last time I played at Anfield for this club, so it’s really important that I’ve come here and tick that one off because it has been preying on my mind.”
Harry Maguire deserves new Man United deal
Scoring the winning goal at Anfield is what all United players dream of, and Maguire now has that on his portfolio.
But even with the Anfield performance aside, Maguire has proven this season that he is still a key member of the squad and more than deserving of a new deal.

Maguire will need to take a pay cut from his current £190,000 per week wages in order to extend his stay at Old Trafford, but reports suggest he is willing to make a financial sacrifice.
Amorim has been full of praise for Maguire’s leadership behind the scenes, and he is certainly a character that should be kept in the dressing room, even if he is not a starter every week.
