Mason Greenwood gave an interview to the club website over the weekend in which he talked about his season so far.

Greenwood has struck 10 goals, a tally he is pleased to reach midway through his opening season with the first team.

He wants more too, as he should like any goal-hungry young striker. Greenwood said: “If someone said to me at the start of the season, you’ll score 10 goals for Manchester United in your first season, I would have taken it straight away. I’ve done that now and I want more.”

The opportunity right now for Greenwood is better than he could have imagined as he exits the winter break.

He has the chance to end this season as Manchester United’s first choice central striker.

Unconvincing competitors

Anthony Martial has been lacklustre over the past few weeks for United and many are questioning whether he is really good enough to lead the line after all.

It will only really be fair to assess that once he has had time to play with Fernandes, a run in the team with better service.

So far though he has 12 goals in 2,105 minutes this season. Greenwood’s 10 have come in a more efficient 1,480 minutes.

Odion Ighalo is a total wildcard. He will come in and relieve pressure on both Greenwood and Martial.

The Nigerian will need a fast start, as if he does not perform over the first couple of months, United are likely to give Greenwood more opportunities looking ahead to next season.

Challenge accepted?

Greenwood finished as United’s top scorer in the Europa League group stages with four goals in five games.

It will be interesting to see if he is given the same prominent chance in the knockout phases.

Strong performances in the latter stages can really set him apart from his teammates and showcase his credentials.

Greenwood may be the underdog compared to Martial and Ighalo, yet it would be no surprise if the 18-year-old came out on top.

A different challenge will present itself in the summer with the club likely to sign a new striker. Greenwood can give himself an advantage next season by finishing this campaign as top dog.
