Manchester United have 14 players competing in the 2026 World Cup but there are also some baffling omissions.

The 2026 World Cup is now well underway and there are 14 Manchester United stars competing across 10 different nations.

Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford were called up to Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, and they will begin their cup campaign on Wednesday evening against Croatia.

On the same evening, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot will represent Portugal as they kickstart their tournament.

Goncalo Ramos questions Luke Shaw’s World Cup snub

Fernandes and Dalot’s Portuguese teammate Goncalo Ramos will also hope to start on Wednesday evening, and the PSG striker was left baffled by Tuchel’s choice to snub Luke Shaw.

In a podcast on the Pedro Teixeira Da Mota YouTube channel, Ramos said: “Luke Shaw, he played almost the entire season at United, that is strange too.”

“He played the whole thing. It wasn’t just that he played; he was a starter in all 38 Premier League games.”

Shaw was ever-present for United in 2025/26 as Ramos points out, yet apparently it wasn’t enough to convince Tuchel to involve him in the Three Lions squad.

Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw were unlucky

Ramos isn’t the only one who is scratching his head at Shaw being snubbed.

Kyle Walker questioned why Shaw wasn’t called up, as well as United teammate Harry Maguire, who has been a key player for England in recent tournaments.

Frankly, both Shaw and Maguire ended the season brilliantly for United, so Tuchel may live to regret leaving the two Red Devils stars at home.

Meanwhile, Michael Carrick will be quietly pleased that the two experienced defenders can rest over the summer and return fresh for the 2026/27 season.
