The Red Devils hosted Pep Guardiola’s men at Old Trafford for Michael Carrick’s first match in charge as interim manager, with Man Utd beating Manchester City 2-0.

Following United’s stunning result against City, the Red Devils turned their attention to Premier League leaders Arsenal and visited the Emirates last Sunday evening.

Michael Carrick made it six Premier League points from six after Man Utd defeated Arsenal 3-2 in a sensational comeback performance in their massive clash.

Gary Neville’s feelings on Ruben Amorim’s handling of Man Utd midfielder Kobbie Mainoo

Kobbie Mainoo picked up an all-important assist for Matheus Cunha’s sensational winner in Manchester United’s performance against Arsenal at the Emirates.

The 20-year-old England international played the full 90 minutes against the Gunners, having done the same for the Manchester derby match at Old Trafford.

Gary Neville was baffled by Ruben Amorim’s handling of Kobbie Mainoo in the 2025-26 season after the former United manager dropped him from the starting XI.

Should Kobbie Mainoo be in the England squad for the 2026 World Cup?

After recent form, will Thomas Tuchel be convinced?

“I must admit, I never liked the handling of Mainoo,” he said on The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast.

“I think we talked about that a lot on this show. I never liked the handling of that.

“When he said at the start of the season, Ruben, that basically it was him or Bruno [Fernandes], I never agreed with that. I thought it was rubbish. It killed him.

“It killed him, to be fair, publicly. And then he never put him in the team at all, apart from [the] Grimsby [match].”

Gary Neville’s rant on Kobbie Mainoo has Man Utd legend Roy Keane sending an important message to fans

United legend Neville was left scratching his head at how Kobbie Mainoo fell below Manuel Ugarte in the midfield pecking order under Ruben Amorim as well.

“But when you watch Kobbie now in the two games, that was nearly pushing a talented player out of the club before he even really had a chance to perform,” he continued.

“To be fair, you look at him now in these two matches, you think, how could that be? I mean, what would you say? How could Ugarte [be picked ahead of him]?”

Should Kobbie Mainoo be an automatic starter under Michael Carrick now?

Neville’s rant against Amorim around Mainoo was called out by Roy Keane over the fact that his reaction was based on only two matches under Michael Carrick.

“It is only two games,” Keane said.

“Well, people are getting carried away at United. We saw it after the game. It can be. It’s like when Man United win a game.

“I know at United we can be extreme. They’re losing a few matches at the end of the world. They win a few matches, they’re back.

“You’ve got to get that balance right. Even the reaction after the game. Like, we should all be sitting here, ex-United players going, this has to be a bit of your group. They’re going, we expect to go and compete with these teams.”

Mainoo made his first Premier League start of the 2025-26 season under Carrick and has completed back-to-back 90 minutes for the first time in the campaign as well.
