How much credit Amorim deserves for this run of form by United is up for debate, but even his most ardent supporters can’t claim not to be surprised by what Carrick is doing.
Amorim was clearly failing to get the best out of the team at his disposal, a theory that has been proven true by Carrick in just six games.
Part of that underperformance was down to his tactical methods and the stubbornness stemming from them.
Amorim was famous for saying that not even the Pope could get him to change the formation, but Neville thinks United’s success after his sacking might do the trick!
He said [via Sky Sports’ Gary Neville Podcast]: “Ruben Amorim must be sitting there at home watching Manchester United. I mean, I don’t think he’s a guy that will sit there and think that, you know, I can’t believe this is happening. I think he’ll be, you know, he’s worked with a lot of these players and a lot of the staff.
“I think he might be sitting there thinking, ‘what will I do differently in the future when I’m in that same position again, and I get another job, and maybe I am sort of being a little bit stubborn and not quite making the changes that the players want.”
Amorim is likely to prove Neville wrong
It’s all well and good if Amorim realises what he could have done better, but if he couldn’t do it when he saw things going wrong under him, then he won’t after seeing things going right under someone else.

The stubbornness is something Amorim prided himself on, so a run of six unbeaten games is unlikely to deter him in his career.
However, he can’t walk away from the reality that the better Carrick does at Old Trafford, the more hits his legacy takes at the club.
It will also affect his future prospects, because his take on being adaptable is probably the first question he will be asked now in interviews.
If Neville is right and Amorim takes a more pragmatic route in his future jobs, then he will be the only one to benefit.
Knowing him, however, you wouldn’t bet on that happening.
