Gary Neville singled out El Hadji Malick Diouf for struggling vs Man Utd earlier this season amid new transfer links

Gary Neville has been critical of Manchester United transfer target El Hadji Malick Diouf in the past when the West Ham left-back played at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are linked with El Hadji Malick Diouf as the club draws up a shortlist of targets to bolster the left-back department.

Luke Shaw is the current mainstay at left-back, but, at 30 and with a worrying track record with injuries, it would be naive to rely on the England international next season.

That is why United need to explore the left-back market for the right option, whether that is Diouf or another potential target.

Gary Neville was critical of El Hadji Malick Diouf after Old Trafford showdown

Former United captain Gary Neville knows a good full-back when he sees one because he mastered the role for many years under Sir Alex Ferguson’s guidance.

Neville wasn’t impressed by West Ham’s Diouf when he played against United in December.

United drew 1-1 with West Ham when Soungoutou Magassa scored in the 83rd minute to cancel out Diogo Dalot’s opening goal.

Diouf had a difficult evening up against Amad Diallo, which Neville was keen to point out at the time.

“Amad is the only player who looks like he’s got a bit of something,” Neville said about United via Sky Sports.

He added: “Diouf [was] really uncomfortable. It’s fair to say the West Ham left-back has struggled. Amad has come out on top.”

With the Hammers fighting for Premier League survival, United fans will be keeping a close eye on how Diouf performs for West Ham in the remaining four games of the season.

Who was the last player Man Utd signed from West Ham?

The last West Ham player to sign for United was Carlos Tevez back in 2007, on a two-year loan deal that led to a third-party ownership dispute.

Paul Ince was another player who transferred from West Ham to United in 1989.

Only time will tell if Diouf becomes the latest player to switch from West Ham to Old Trafford.

United fans will be immediately hoping it doesn’t end up leading to more controversy, as experienced with Tevez and Ince, despite being great players.
