Manchester United take on Tottenham next Wednesday with European silverware on the line for the all-English Europa League final.
It is a bizarre situation with the two formerly big six teams sitting 16th and 17th in the Premier League this season, yet could conclude the campaign with silverware and Champions League qualification.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
| 15 | 36 | 10 | 10 | 16 | 42 | 59 | -17 | 40 | |
| 16 | 36 | 10 | 9 | 17 | 42 | 53 | -11 | 39 | |
| 17 | 36 | 11 | 5 | 20 | 63 | 59 | 4 | 38 |
This is an appalling record for both clubs, and for Manchester United, a lot is resting on the 2025 Europa League final, both financially and in terms of getting into Europe next season to attract better players in the summer.
It is thought that Liam Delap is still waiting to see who gets European football before deciding on his future destination in the transfer window.
So a lot is resting on the game, for both clubs, but there is an admitted truth for United that it will be Tottenham who arrive at the San Mames in Bilbao with the better team. Ange Postecoglou has also beaten United three times this season, including two wins over Ruben Amorim.
This is something Gary Neville has now made abundantly clear in his comments regarding the game and a combined line-up.

Gary Neville says only Bruno Fernandes gets into the Tottenham team
Neville has been speaking on The Overlap fan debate and admitted that he feels physically sick about the game on the 21st of May, with it being so important for United.
He also stated that he expects Spurs to win the game, due to their better squad, which he outlined with a rant in which he picked just one United player who would get into the Tottenham team.
“When you look at Tottenham’s players like-for-like with United’s, only Bruno Fernandes, in my opinion, would get into Tottenham’s first XI. I would choose every single Tottenham player over Man Utd’s in the final.
“The goalkeeper is a 50/50 split because I don’t like Guglielmo Vicario, and I’m not a fan of Onana. Honestly, [Destiny] Udogie, [Pedro] Porro, [Micky] Van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr, Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Dominic Solanke, Dejan Kulusevski, Son Heung-min. I would choose every single player over United’s.
“They have better forwards, better defenders, and better midfielders apart from Bruno.”
This is a harsh review by Neville, although it comes across as very honest, demonstrating how much work Ineos will have to do in the transfer window.
Spurs will be without Maddison for the final, along with potentially Dejan Kulusevski, but they remain the better team on paper.
Gary Neville lauds Bruno Fernandes as a standout for Manchester United
Fernandes being the only player who would get into the Spurs team is a damning show of where United are, but it is also something we cannot argue against.
This is after a decade of poor recruitment, which Neville says has only seen one signing arrive and improve after joining.
“Not one single player who has joined United in the past 10 years has improved apart from Bruno Fernandes. He’s a standout, to be fair, he’s amazing.”
Fernandes has broken records this season for United despite the club being two places above relegation, which showcases his supreme talent that nobody else at the club has, apart from maybe Amad Diallo in the near future.
