Manchester United legend Gary Neville was left in stitches after Roy Keane hit back at him with a prickly reaction over his so-called nickname.

Roy Keane and Gary Neville played alongside one another at Old Trafford and achieved incredible success under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Neville spent his entire playing career at United and even became captain after club legend Roy Keane was axed from Old Trafford in 2005.

The 49-year-old former United right-back was a mainstay under Sir Alex Ferguson and made a whopping 599 senior appearances for the Red Devils.

One of the famed ‘Class of ‘92’ members, Neville lifted eight Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies, three FA Cups and three League Cups.

Keane enjoyed his own incredible success at United, including captaining the Red Devils to their iconic treble win in the famous 1998-99 season.

The 52-year-old Irishman was a linchpin midfield figure in Ferguson’s United teams of the past and excelled in his leadership role as club captain.

Keane lifted seven Premier League titles, a Champions League and four FA Cups with United before he signed for Scottish side Celtic in 2005.

Neville shares Keane’s nickname

Gary Neville and Roy Keane both appeared on the latest episode of the Stick to Football show alongside Arsenal legend Ian Wright and Jill Scott.

The Stick to Football panel vented their frustration at a range of miscellaneous topics, including Keane’s stance on handshakes and hugging.

Jill Scott said it was “awkward” when it came to hugging Keane compared with either United legend Neville or ITV pundit Wright.

Amid Scott’s conversation about trying to hug Keane, Neville insisted that his former United teammate refers to himself as a hedgehog as his nickname.

“But his nickname is hedgehog,” Neville told Scott on The Overlap.

“He honestly calls himself hedgehog. He’s a hedgehog.”

Responding to Neville, a bemused Scott asked: “Is it?”

Neville’s admission sparked a spikey response from Keane, who immediately dismissed that his nickname was hedgehog.

“That’s not my nickname, Gary. Bloody hell,” Keane said.

Man Utd legend Keane on hugging

Keane made his feelings clear on hugging and insisted that it should be reserved for “someone special” in his life.

The no-nonsense Irish hardman suggested that he appreciated a head nod from someone he knows rather than giving out hugs.

“But a hug’s got to be from people you might like. Like, someone special in your life,” Keane said.

He added: “My wife and my kids and my grandchildren and the dogs and that’s it.

“Hugs for nobody else. A hug’s got to be special. Now you know. No more hugging, Jill.”
