Gary Neville has admitted there are three all-important things at Manchester United that he remains “steadfast” on amid the current climate at the Premier League club.
Manchester United have hit a low point this season after their disastrous start to the 2024-25 Premier League campaign saw Erik ten Hag sacked last October.
Ruud van Nistelrooy was installed as interim manager for four matches before the United legend left Old Trafford ahead of Ruben Amorim’s arrival from Sporting CP.
United triggered the £9.25m release clause in Ruben Amorim’s Sporting CP contract and the 40-year-old manager replaced Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout.
Amorim has become the Red Devils’ sixth permanent head coach since legendary former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
United have struggled to climb back to the top of English football in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era and have not won the Premier League title since the 2012-13 season.
Neville’s conviction on Man Utd claim
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been keen to restore Manchester United’s prestige in football after the Ineos chief became co-owner of the Red Devils in 2023.
The 72-year-old British billionaire has admitted that he wants to “knock” both Manchester City and Liverpool “off their perch” with a resurgent United.
Ratcliffe’s Ineos team took control of football operations at United after his minority stake purchase and have wasted no time making behind-the-scenes changes.
The United co-owner is pushing for the redevelopment of Old Trafford and Gary Neville is part of the Red Devils’ ‘Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force.’
Speaking to The Daily Mail, Neville offered his two cents on United potentially knocking down Old Trafford and moving towards building a new stadium.
The 49-year-old United legend added that he is “always convinced” that the Red Devils will “win again” and they will “win big” when they do in the future.
“It wouldn’t upset me (to see Old Trafford knocked down) I am steadfast in three things,” he told the newspaper.
“Manchester United should have the best stadium in the world. They should have the best training ground and they should play entertaining attacking football. It might be arrogance, it but that’s how I feel.
“I do believe it will change, by the way. One thing I’m always convinced about, and I’m steadfast, Manchester United will win again. And they’ll win big.
“At the moment, I don’t see that happening in the near future. But at least we’ve got football people in there now, who understand football.”
Neville talks Amorim and Man Utd
Neville said that he feels for Ruben Amorim’s current predicament and claimed that the United manager must be asking himself what he is watching week in and week out.
The Sky Sports pundit also believes that the former Sporting CP boss is already making the “tough decisions,” including axing Marcus Rashford from his squad.
“It’s got to a point whereby you think it can’t go any lower,” Neville said.
“Ruben Amorim, I bet he can’t believe what he’s seeing. Some weeks you think ‘what the hell am I watching?’
“It is going to take tough decisions. And to be fair to Ruben Amorim, he’s making tough decisions, like the Marcus Rashford one.
“How can you play so well against Liverpool, who are the best team in the country, and then lose at home to Crystal Palace? That’s the bit where I lose sympathy because that’s not right.
“That’s about pride, personal levels, getting up for every game. I used to call it slap yourself across the face. F—— wake yourself up because you’ll get a shock if you’re not on it.
“Any Premier League team, whether it’s now or whether it’s 20 years ago, if you’re one, two, three, four per cent off where you should be, they’ll do you.”
