Manchester United have been thrashed 7-0 at the hands of a resurgent Liverpool. Where did that come from?

United were outfought and outplayed, losing concentrating and intensity, suffering a truly awful scoreline.

After going in 1-0 down at half-time, United conceded six goals in the second half, with Liverpool fully deserving of their win.

This was a wake-up call, a real shock to the system, the worst result under Erik ten Hag so far.

Neville reacts and criticises Fernandes

Former Manchester United star Gary Neville hit out at the performance during his commentary for Sky Sports, and also criticised Bruno Fernandes.

Neville said: “The second half has been a disgrace, an absolute shambles, epitomised by Bruno Fernandes who has been embarrassing at times.”

Fernandes had captained the team and failed to exert any positive influence on the game, appealing and over exaggerating fouls made against him.

He completed only 18 passes, creating just one chance early in the game.

Roy Keane told Sky Sports after the full time whistle: “Players will be embarrassed and ashamed. They went missing in the second half.”

He added: “Fernandes’ body language was disgraceful.”

United are next in action at Old Trafford against Real Betis on Thursday, and in the league against Southampton.

It is crucial to bounce back from this result with a victory and shake it off. United have done so previously under Ten Hag, and his players will need to show more character than they did in the second half at Anfield.

Losing at Anfield hurts, and the manner of this defeat will stick in the memory for a long time.
