Gary Neville has named the one Liverpool man he would take at Manchester United tomorrow in a surprise statement.

The former Manchester United right-back has given his verdict on who he would take from Anfield if he had to and break the unwritten law of never representing United and Liverpool.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United are performing below expectation this season, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, after a tough season last year, have now taken a leap forward after a poor 2022/23.

After finishing third last season, the hope was that the Red Devils could kick on under the former Ajax boss and fight for the title, but that couldn’t be further from reality at this moment in time.

Neville’s Liverpool pick

Speaking on The Daily Ketchup podcast, Gary Neville, the former United defender and Sky Sports pundit, was asked about Jurgen Klopp and whether he believes he is the best manager in the world and also made a rather surprising admission.

Neville said: “I’d say Jurgen Klopp. Jurgen Klopp works with a budget that is far less than Pep Guardiola. Pep Guardiola’s a genius, and he’ll be the one who will be remembered forever more. But Jurgen Klopp, for me, is an amazing manager.

“If you said to me which manager could I bring to Manchester United tomorrow, it would be Jurgen Klopp.”

There may be little surprise with Neville’s choice as the German manager has been the most revolutionary addition to Liverpool’s team in the past two decades.

United’s own version of Klopp

Ten Hag, despite his poor start to the season, deserves time and patience to turn things around and build his own dynasty at Old Trafford.

Klopp has earned the right after winning major trophies for Liverpool, but look at the patience shown amid their disappointing 2022/23, which has led to a resurgence this season. The German has the right support behind the scenes at Anfield, something many feel Ten Hag lacks at United.

If the right backroom team is in place at Old Trafford then the Dutchman may well begin to flourish at the club, similar to how he was doing last season.

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos on the verge of completing their 25 per cent purchase of the club, the former Ajax boss may finally be a part of a stable environment with strong footballing people, similar to the conditions he was working with during his time in the Netherlands.
