Gary Neville names the Manchester United player he blames for Man City equaliser in derby defeat

Gary Neville has blamed one player’s mistake for Manchester City’s equaliser in Manchester United’s derby day defeat on Sunday.

Manchester United actually put up more of a fight than many expected on their trip to the Etihad Stadium and took the lead through a Marcus Rashford rocket.

However, Manchester City dominated the ball and had Erik ten Hag’s side on the ropes throughout.

The home side’s control eventually paid off when Phil Foden scored an equally impressive screamer to level things up.

Foden would go on to get the winner before Erling Haaland made it three late on.

It was a spirited display from United despite the disappointing defeat but Gary Neville did lay the blame at Rashford’s feet for the equaliser.

Gary Neville blames Marcus Rashford for Man City’s equaliser

City won the ball for their goal from Rashford as the striker went down easily under pressure from Kyle Walker as he tried to buy a free-kick.

The referee didn’t give him one, though, and City went up the other end and scored. Rashford and Ten Hag were fuming afterwards but Neville didn’t think it was a foul and instead blamed the No.10.

Speaking on Sky Sports commentary while watching a replay of the goal, Neville said: “It’s soft from Marcus Rashford.

“He needs to stand up. He didn’t need to go down at all, he thought the referee would fall for it but it’s minimal contact.”

Promising signs from Marcus Rashford

Rashford did go down easily trying to win a free-kick but more often than not the forward would get the foul in that scenario and would be praised for smart forward play.

He was unfortunate in this case but at least there were promising signs from Rashford after a difficult few weeks.

Namely, his sensational goal, which will hopefully do his confidence a world of good.

the 26-year-old did squander a couple of other chances to go through and struggled in the second half as United had little possession, but maybe this will be the start of another great run of form.
