Gary Neville has called on Manchester United to help out new signing Rasmus Hojlund by signing a proven centre-forward.

Rasmus Hojlund clinched his £64 million move from Atalanta at the weekend, but is viewed as a player for the future, rather than being an instant 30-goal forward.

Hojlund is beginning the season with an injury too. Meanwhile, Anthony Martial has not played a single minute of pre-season.

Neville would still like Manchester United to secure a deal for England striker Harry Kane.

Neville calls for Manchester United to sign Harry Kane

Speaking on The Overlap, Neville says he wants Manchester United to add Harry Kane to take the pressure off Rasmus Hojlund.

He believes at present, United will be competing for third place at best behind Manchester City and Arsenal.

Neville said: “You’ve got these two unknowns at both ends of the pitch that really have to hit it off to be better than last season.

“He needed two centre forwards, he needs two centre forwards. Antony Martial will leave or be unpredictable. Marcus [Rashford] wants to play on the left. United do not have a centre forward.

“United need Harry Kane, they still need the young lad as well to back him up, play 25-30 games. This kid up front, everyone is going to be watching him. massive pressure, he needs that pressure taking off him a little bit.

“Kane puts United into that realm of catching City and Arsenal.”

Kane scored 30 goals for a poor Tottenham side last season and has only one year left on his contract.

Bayern Munich chase Kane

German champions Bayern Munich are currently learning the hard way that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is difficult to deal with. BBC Sport reported their latest offer for Harry Kane was rejected.

Neville suggested he hopes United are hanging back, before entering the race for Kane later, and is confident Kane would prefer to

The pundit said: “He [Levy] accepts the £100m Euros and Kane says ‘I don’t want to go there [Bayern] but I’ll go there [United].”

He added that he believes breaking Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record would be more attractive to Kane than winning Bundesliga titles.

United are currently looking at selling players, which would raise funds for some late incoming. Whether this extends to a late move for Kane, we remain sceptical, but let’s not rule it out totally.
