Gary Neville hopes this is the first and last time he sees those five Manchester United players start together in the heart of Ruben Amorim’s system.
While the consensus remains that this is a talented squad playing far worse than the sum of their parts, a few injury issues and those late returns from international duty shone a rather harsh light on some of Manchester United’s flaws.
While Casemiro and Christian Eriksen have had their moments this season – Paul Scholes was full of praise for Eriksen after a fine run of goalscoring form recently – the sight of two 30-somethings starting together in the heart of midfield always felt like an accident waiting to happen.
As expected, Ipswich Town created their fair share of problems during Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Portman Road by slicing through the heart of a United engine room leaking oil and caked in rust.
And with a 36-year-old Jonny Evans in behind, the return to full fitness of Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Leny Yoro and Mason Mount really cannot come soon enough.

For Neville, concerns over Man United’s largely underwhelming display in East Anglia are offset by the fact that this was clearly far from the new boss’ best – or most suitable – starting XI.
Amorim confirmed that Manuel Ugarte was left on the bench due to his involvement in Uruguay’s World Cup qualifiers. The former Sporting boss has spoken glowingly about Mount, meanwhile, and few appear better suited to his high-octane style than United’s most ferocious presser.
Yoro is closing in on his long-awaited Man United debut, too. That, with Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez also set to return, means a back three of Evans, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui is unlikely to become a regular fixture.
Much to Neville’s relief. “I cannot believe, with the summer they had and the players they have brought in, that they have deteriorated to this level,” Neville sighs. “But I am hoping, with the new manager [things will change].
“[The performance against Ipswich] was more of the same. But I do think that’s because he picked the players that he had been working with for a week or so.
“We will never see Casemiro, Eriksen, Mazraoui, Evans and De Ligt play as the five again in those important positions,” adds the former Red Devils captain. “I just don’t think that will happen.
“So, when you get Ugarte in there, when you get Mainoo in there, get Luke Shaw at left centre-back, I do think all of a sudden you will see a better level of performance straight away.
“And then, in the next few months, [it will be about Amorim] just finding out about the players and getting into as good a position as you can for the end of the season.”

Amorim’s thrilling Sporting side destroyed Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Champions League a few weeks back with Morten Hjulmand and Hidemasa Morita as their midfield duo.
It is not difficult to imagine Ugarte – who shone under Amorim in Lisbon – emulating Hjulmand’s ball-winning role in United red, with the velvety Mainoo playing the Morita role.
“I tried to use all the training we had during this week. So we had, for example, Casemiro [with] more time to train,” Amorim explained before that Ipswich clash, the veteran enforcer stuck at Carrington after being left out of the Brazil roster.
“Ugarte only had one day to train. So we tried to use the players that I passed more information on to. I think that was a key point.”
United are back in action on Thursday. Amorim will take charge at Old Trafford for the first time against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League.
