Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney was fortunate enough to play with some legends of the club during his time at Old Trafford.
Playing alongside the likes of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs played its part in Wayne Rooney becoming the club’s highest ever goalscorer, along with his own breathtaking talent.
This has only served to benefit Rooney’s judgement of what makes a top player, and he feels Manchester United have one, in club captain Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes, 29, was named in the starting line-up last night against Nottingham Forest, continuing his streak of starting every game in 2024.

Gary Lineker and Wayne Rooney discussed Bruno Fernandes during the BBC’s coverage of the FA Cup fifth round clash with Manchester United and Nottingham Forest.
Lineker offered his compliments towards Fernandes, saying to Rooney: “He’s the sort of player you’d like to play with, he’s very creative.”
Rooney was in total agreement, responding: “A lot of the goals the chances come through Bruno, he can be frustrating at times, he gives the ball away, but you’d rather have a player like that who’s willing to try things and willing to make mistakes to get that final pass right, or that final shot.”
Fernandes ended up making the decisive pass last night too, with his free-kick headed in by Casemiro for the winner.
Bruno Fernandes’ reward has recently not matched the risk
Bruno Fernandes does carry risk and reward in the way he plays his game, with seemingly no in between.
He has failed to score a Premier League goal since the winner away at Fulham in early November, which was so long ago, that Mason Mount was fit at the time.
This weekend Manchester United visit Manchester City in the Premier League. He has not scored at The Etihad since United won there without fans in 2021.
It would be the perfect place for him to break his drought with another meaningful strike.
