Gareth Southgate now hints at position change for ‘fabulous’ Man Utd gem

As the March internationals fast approach, Gareth Southgate has spoken about a potential Kobbie Mainoo call-up.

Manchester United‘s supremely talented 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo has been on the tip of everyone’s tongue in recent weeks as he’s turned into a regular at Old Trafford.

This has seen him earn comparisons to the likes of Clarence Seedorf from Rio Ferdinand and also just be lauded in general by various others.

But one man whom everyone has wanted to hear from was England boss Gareth Southgate who will have an unexpected choice to make before this summer’s European Championships.

Southgate hints at new Kobbie Mainoo position

Speaking with the press in Paris following Thursday’s Nations League draw, as you’d expect Mainoo was the topic of discussion for Southgate, according to The Mirror.

When asked about the 18-year-old’s performances, he said, “I think Mainoo is doing brilliantly for a young player.”

“He’s had an excellent start for Manchester United. I’m not certain he’s necessarily going to be a defensive midfielder, as such.

“He’s quite a progressive player, but he’s had a fabulous start to his career and it will be good to monitor him as we go forward.”

Mainoo has already shown he can play further forward

Southgate has good reason to believe that Mainoo is destined to play a more progressive role than the number six position he’s started out in.

In his last three games, Mainoo has bagged two goals already for United including his wonder-strike against Wolves.

This goal has been praised by Paul Merson for its brilliance, and it truly was that, brilliant.

The nutmeg on Max Kilman might’ve even been the best part and shows he has the silky dribbling and skill required to play a more progressive role.
