United’s derby day win over City was a statement victory for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

This was the third win over City this season. This time it felt like it really meant something.

Back in December there was distrust that the team could follow the result up. They didn’t, drawing at home to Everton and then losing to Watford.

The cup semi-final second leg victory was a hollow win as we had lost the first leg by a bigger scoreline.

This one felt like a big moment. Three wins over City in one season is no coincidence. United were the better team and are moving in the right direction.

Keep it together

The win was a great moment and one to bring United fans and players together.

Enjoy it, but it’s also smart not to make too much of it. Home wins over City should not be so rare.

It is useful to remember that one year ago United enjoyed a special moment, winning away at PSG in the Champions League.

The victory brought wild celebrations, and everybody got a little bit too carried away.

Midfielder Fred sent an important message out after the win, urging the importance of staying focused and moving onto the next game.

Fred’s message is so important and while fans can and always will get carried away, the players and management have to stay calm.

United travel to LASK in the Europa League, with the Austrian side a dangerous unknown quantity capable of springing an upset on home turf.

Then we travel to Tottenham next weekend facing a Jose Mourinho side who know their top four chances could be over with a defeat. It is at these moments the former United boss often gets the best from his players.

Fred saw last year how quickly a positive moment can turn sour. United followed up the PSG win with consecutive losses to Arsenal and Wolves and never recovered.

One game at a time, it is important the squad stay focused and do not let these high standards drop.
