Former Man Utd goalkeeper Sergio Romero signs for new club

There is a strong argument that Sergio Romero is the best backup goalkeeper Manchester United have ever had.

Sergio Romero played in the 2014 World Cup Final for Argentina prior to his Manchester United move.

He was later convinced to join Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, who he previously worked with at AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands.

Van Gaal had impressive powers of persuasion, as there was never a realistic chance that Romero could displace David de Gea, who was entering his peak.

Despite this, Romero gave a great account of himself during six years at Manchester United between 2015 and 2021, proving to be a reliable backup goalkeeper.

There were times that despite De Gea’s brilliance, some United fans wondered if Romero could be even more than that.

He was harshly treated by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, dropped from three semi-finals that the team lost in 2020/21, after playing in every round to get to each of them.

Sergio Romero leaves Boca Juniors

Sergio Romero spent one season in Italy with Venezia after leaving United. In 2022 he returned to Argentina to sign with Boca Juniors.

He was subsequently reunited with Edinson Cavani, Marcos Rojo and even Ander Herrera at Boca, but in a shock turn of events, Romero has now left the club after three seasons.

Romero’s contract was terminated by mutual consent in a cost-cutting move from Boca Juniors. His deal was set to expire in December.

Once a regular for Boca, Romero was dropped in 2024 by new manager Fernando Gago, and later underwent surgery on a knee injury.

Now he has signed with fellow Argentine side Argentinos, who needed a new goalkeeper after their first-choice stopper suffered an injury.

Romero, 38, has signed a one-year deal with Argentinos, who rank 12th in the table after 13 games. Boca Juniors are in fourth place.

Sergio Romero speaks on Argentinos move

Sergio Romero is excited about his fresh start and wants to prove a point, arguing that he has already bounced back once before.

Speaking to Argentine newspaper Ole, he said: “At first [at Boca] things went pretty well for me. When many people said Romero was finished, I showed them that I wasn’t finished, and now I’ll do the same at Argentinos.”

Romero could go straight into action this weekend against Newell’s, and then days later they play in the semi-final of the Copa Argentina against Belgrano.

In total Romero ended up playing 88 games for Boca Juniors, including playing a heroic role to help them reach the 2023 Copa Libertadores Final. He played 61 times for Manchester United.

He is the second of the United contingent to leave Boca, with Marcos Rojo departing to join Racing Club earlier this year.
