One of Manchester United’s most reliable backup goalkeepers, Sergio Romero, is proving a point in Argentina.
Romero quit Boca Juniors last week, with his contract terminated by mutual consent. Romero was no longer considered a starter
The goalkeeper signed with top flight side Argentinos, and went straight into first team action days later.
Sergio Romero off to winning start
After clinching his move to Argentinos, Sergio Romero declared that he wanted to prove he was not ‘finished’, having already done so before.
Speaking to Argentine newspaper Ole, he said: “When many people said Romero was finished, I showed them that I wasn’t finished, and now I’ll do the same at Argentinos.”
Romero is off to a pretty good start. Argentinos won against Newell’s at the weekend with a 3-1 victory.
The former Manchester United goalkeeper made two saves during the win, showing the shot-stopping abilities that have served him well during his long career.
This was Romero’s first appearance at any level since December 2, 2024.
His Argentinos side rank third in the table, above Romero’s former club Boca Juniors, who lie in seventh.
Next up Romero faces Belgrano in the semi-finals of the Copa Argentina.

Sergio Romero was a popular goalkeeper at Manchester United, after joining the club in 2015 under Louis van Gaal.
Romero took on an impossible task, attempting to compete with nailed-on first choice goalkeeper David de Gea, one of the club’s best ever.
Romero played 62 games for United in total during his time for the club, showing an ability that left many United fans feeling he deserved more of a chance.
