Five world class midfielders Manchester United could sign to replace Herrera

Ander Herrera has said his goodbyes to Manchester United and will be moving on.

The Spaniard’s exit leaves a gap in midfield and increases the pressure on the club to be major players in the transfer market this summer.

Herrera needs replacing, and another midfielder may also be needed too.

Here is a look at five Herrera replacement options United could sign this summer…

PSG ace Rabiot is available on a free transfer this summer and his move to Barcelona fell through after they signed Frenkie de Jong.

The Sun reported in March that United had joined the race for the midfielder. The 24-year-old has title-winning experience in France and has played more than 220 games for PSG.

Due to the fact he will be free, signing Rabiot could still allow United to sign one of these options too…

Saul Niguez

Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez would be an ideal like for like replacement for Herrera, he may even be better.

The Times reports he is high on United’s wanted list and is keen on a move to England.
Niguez has a release clause of £130 million and a contract until 2026. It is claimed however that Atletico would be prepared to do business at £80 million.

Lyon star Ndombele is Paul Pogba’s new and future midfield partner for France.

The defensive midfielder helped Lyon to a win away at City this season in the Champions League and has been terrific for the past two seasons.

He is more of a natural replacement for Nemanja Matic than Herrera, but that should not stop United pushing for his signature.

Donny van de Beek

Ajax star Van de Beek has shown he has it all, with a series of outstanding performances in the Champions League this season.

Van de Beek is valued at around £50 million and competition will be high for his signature, with The Sun claiming interest from Real Madrid.

He could be an upgrade on Herrera and at just 22-years-old, he fits the right profile of player United should be targeting.
