Manchester United will be heading back to the Champions League for the 2026-27 campaign under Red Devils head coach Michael Carrick at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have been out of Europe’s elite club competition since the 2023-24 season under Erik ten Hag, who was axed as Manchester United manager in 2024.

United punched their ticket back to the Champions League for the upcoming campaign after securing a third-place Premier League finish under Michael Carrick.

1. What ‘seed’ and ‘pot’ will Man Utd likely be in for the Champions League?

UEFA will have four seeding pots for next season’s Champions League and all 36 teams will be divided into different pots that consist of nine clubs each.

Where each club will land will depend on UEFA’s club coefficients, a system for ranking and seeding teams in both club competitions and international level.

According to UEFA’s official website, Man Utd are currently 25th overall in the table and have 58.5 points in total amid the ranking of different European teams.

Man Utd look set to be in ‘Pot 2’ for the Champions League ahead of the league phase draw at UEFA’s headquarters on 27th August in Nyon, Switzerland.

2. Who will Man Utd be drawn against in the Champions League?

Under the Champions League’s league phase format, which was introduced in the 2024-25 season, the Red Devils will play eight matches in the first stage.

United will play against two teams from each of the four pots, including facing two clubs from the pot they land in — it is expected to be Pot 2 at the time of writing.

The Red Devils will play one match at home and one fixture away in each pot that they are matched with a potential Champions League opponent from.

3. Man Utd are protected from facing rival Premier League teams in the Champions League to start with

Premier League sides Arsenal, Manchester City, Man Utd, Aston Villa and Liverpool will all feature in the 2026-27 Champions League tournament.

However, Michael Carrick’s men will swerve English teams during the Champions League’s league phase until they reach the knockout stages of the competition.

4. The ‘maximum’ number of countries’ teams that Man Utd can initially face in the Champions League

With the four Champions League pots including nine different teams, the Red Devils will be capped at playing against clubs that come from the same country.

It means that Man Utd’s initial run in the league phase will not let them face more than two teams from a single European nation that is featured in the tournament.
