Manchester United’s Europa League match at home to Omonia last month was forecast as an easy win. It was almost a humiliation, with the Red Devils requiring an injury-time winner to claim the three points.
The reason Manchester United found it so difficult was the outstanding performance of stand-in goalkeeper Francis Uzoho.
Uzoho, who was a Manchester United fan, had the game of his life to almost earn his side a point.
Last night United stars Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot were reunited with their nemesis. This time it was a little easier.
Fernandes scores twice past Uzoho
Bruno Fernandes scored two goals past Francis Uzoho in 45 minutes for Portugal before being substituted.
In Manchester United’s Europa League tie, Fernandes had five shots, and was unable to make his mark.
This game for Portugal was far more straightforward, with Manchester United teammate Diogo Dalot providing the assist for Fernandes’ opener.
Dalot made a strong run before cutting the ball back with a low shot into the box, which Fernandes struck first time into the net, leaving Uzoho no chance.
Fernandes’ second goal was a penalty, sending the Nigerian goalkeeper the wrong way.
Goncalo Ramos and Joao Mario added two goals in the second half to make it 4-0. Dalot played all 90 minutes.
Speaking after the game to Mais Futebol, Fernandes hailed the warm-up match as the perfect preparation for the World Cup.
He said: “I think it was a very complete game, we were able to have the ball, manage the game and take advantage of the opportunities to score.
“We were a capable team, today we were a demonstration of that. It was an important step towards what is coming, to build trust.”
Cristiano Ronaldo missed the game with injury and this was an illustration that Portugal will be strong without him, if required.
Fernandes was asked about Ronaldo after the game by reporters and refused to comment.
