The tremors from Ruben Amorim’s sacking are being calmed down by Darren Fletcher, but a longer appointment is set to be finalised soon.
Man Utd are clearly waiting for a post-World Cup carousel to choose from a set of managers available, which is why they are going the interim route now.
With Darren Fletcher in charge for the Burnley game, the expectation is that a new interim manager will be in place soon.
Would you take Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back as Man Utd manager?
Solskjaer is reportedly open to returning to the Old Trafford hotseat
That’s exactly what Fabrizio Romano has confirmed, saying that the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is getting ‘closer’, with the plan for the summer becoming clearer as well.

Man Utd’s interim manager details
Fletcher has stepped up admirably in a time of need for the club, but he should ideally continue his growth with the U18s for at least one full season.
At the same time, United can’t afford to write off this season the same way they did last year, especially in a close league and considering the reason for sacking Amorim.
Therefore, a steady and experienced hand, who’s also capable of getting immediate results without any long-term promise, is the right play here.
That has led Man Utd to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and it was recently reported that he had emerged as the ‘leading contender’ for the job.
Romano now shares the details of Solskjaer’s talks with the club, and the appointment is looking imminent now, with the plan to appoint a ‘big name’ in the summer.
He said: “Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had really concrete talks and is getting closer to getting the job. He offered himself to Man Utd.
“What happened over the afternoon and the evening [of Jan 6, 2026] is his representatives and United were in contact. The negotiation is underway, and he is the leading candidate.
The idea is that he will stay until the summer, and then United will appoint a permanent manager in the summer of 2026 with a big name.”
Man Utd shouldn’t chase big names
Appointing Solskjaer until the end of the season is absolutely the right move, but the plans to chase a ‘big name’ will definitely give Man Utd fans an uneasy feeling.
Prove me wrong… Carlo Ancelotti should be Ineos’ top option to become permanent manager this summer!
Do you think Ancelotti would be a success? Do we stand a chance of getting him?
It’s true that the Man Utd manager needs to have gravitas and authority, but that box was ticked by Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal, and even Ruben Amorim to an extent.
What the club actually needs is a man-manager who can handle the noise around the club instead of becoming frustrated and pushing back at it constantly.
Then comes the intangibles of being attack-minded, fearless, and trusting in youth, because United’s philosophy isn’t a system or an individual, it’s an idea.
Restricting themselves to just big names is what caused United to snowball into a disaster in recruitment. They can’t repeat that play for the dugout.
