With the World Cup coming towards a close, Manchester United are expected to push ahead with strengthening in the upcoming transfer window.

Erik ten Hag told the club website the club are keen to sign a striker, qualifying his intentions with, ‘only when we find the right player.’

Part of striking the right deal is being able to secure the right price, and this is where the World Cup has done United few favours.

Cody Gakpo scored three goals in five games for the Netherlands, adding to his reputation, and PSV Eindhoven’s asking price.

Cody Gakpo could now cost £55 million

Fabrizio Romano explains how PSV’s asking price has increased for Gakpo on the back of his impressive performances in Qatar, following up his strong displays at club level.

The Telegraph reported in the summer how Manchester United hoped to do a deal for Gakpo at £34 million.

This just wasn’t possible alongside the club’s other transfers, with Cristiano Ronaldo still on the books. Now the forward has left, taking his expensive wages with him.

Romano told his YouTube channel: “Contacts with his agents are absolutely ongoing. Gakpo could be on the market for more than 50 million Euros now, 60 to 65 million package including some add-ons, lets see what PSV will decide.”

65 million Euros breaks down at £55.8 million, more than £20 million more expensive than the price United could have signed him for in the summer.

The one advantage is Gakpo’s desire for a move. He mentioned United in an interview last week, still regretful the summer move did not come off.

Romano re-iterated Gakpo’s interest – and said what happens now is on the Red Devils, to follow up and find an agreement with PSV.

He said: “Cody Gakpo will be still keen on a move to Manchester United, an important point. It’s on Man United now.”

Romano added that United are also keen on Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix – but their summer interest was prior to a move for Antony, and couldn’t say whether the club would be willing to pay the Spanish side’s huge asking price.

He also referenced interest in Goncalo Ramos, before adding that Benfica are determined not to sell in January and would only consider an exit next summer.
