PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo has told reporters he is waiting for an offer from Manchester United.
Gakpo told Dutch outlet NRC he was disappointed not to seal his move to Old Trafford in the summer – and hopes the Red Devils return for him.
The forward has been starring for the Netherlands at the World Cup, scoring three goals in four games.
Even more impressively, his three goals have come from his only three shots on target at the tournament.
Gakpo issues ‘come and get me plea’
Gakpo explained he is willing to ‘think about’ a move to Manchester United if an offer comes his way.
This can be construed as a polite way to say he wants the move, while being respectful to current club PSV, and keeping his options open in case United don’t bid.
He said: “I thought of Manchester United, but when that didn’t happen, I didn’t know anymore. And I started to doubt. Leeds United did come. Did I have to go there?
“Now I wait for everything. I haven’t heard from Manchester United yet.
“When they come, I’m going to think about that. I also seek the help of God in these decisions. I ask him what I can do best.”
Fabrizio Romano revealed last week that Manchester United were planning fresh talks with Gakpo’s agents – who also represent manager Erik ten Hag.
The Sun also report United are expected to launch a £50 million move for the Dutchman in January.
Whether this is enough, may depend on how Gakpo’s World Cup form continues.
A huge game is upcoming for Gakpo in the World Cup quarter-finals against Lisandro Martinez’s Argentina.
His comments are encouraging and if a move to Manchester United is the one Gakpo has his heart set on, this could ensure the price tag does not get inflated by a bidding war.
