Ruben Amorim has been able to get his feet under the table at Manchester United due to the international break but squad planning gathers pace in the background.

The Man Utd manager is more of a “head coach” this time around but that doesn’t mean he will have no say in the transfer market or contract renewals.

As such, the agenda of Kobbie Mainoo’s contract stands near the top of that list after the youngster’s continued ascent to becoming a superstar.

Mainoo signed a new contract in February 2023 in his breakout season and has since become a bonafide England international along with a crucial player at Man United.

Therefore, it is understandable that talks should be held again to bring him more in line with his renewed standing in the footballing world.

Fabrizio Romano’s Kobbie Mainoo contract update

Amidst the excitement of the new manager coming, the old one leaving, and a successful interim spell of Ruud van Nistelrooy sandwiched in between, the announcements have been plenty.

Along with Ruben Amorim, six of his staff are also set to join and in a time of such upheaval, it is only natural that the consistent ones take a backseat.

That is exactly what Mainoo has been, ever-dependable to put in quality displays but Romano says that United haven’t forgotten about him, far from it.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said the agreement is not close as of yet but United continue working on it.

He said: “Man Utd have not forgotten about the situation of Kobbie Mainoo. I told you that for United it was important to try to advance on contract talks.

“United are still working and now there’s a new manager who will talk with and inform Kobbie about his new idea. Mainoo is a crucial player for the owners, directors, and staff.

“The new contract of Mainoo will be an important topic. United are working on it. We’re not yet at the final stages but the conversation remains positive on both player and club sides.”

Romano reveals ‘exact’ type of player Ruben Amorim loves

The situation of Mainoo is also very important for Amorim because he’s been the type of manager who loves to promote young talent from the academy.

His Sporting tenure was an unqualified success in this regard and the hope is that he can work his magic with more players at Carrington as well.

Romano has revealed that Amorim ‘loves’ this kind of player, naming Mainoo alongside Leny Yoro, saying it’s exactly the kind of direction Amorim wants to take the club in.

He said: “Ruben Amorim loves this kind of player. So, Mainoo and Leny Yoro, this sort of player is exactly the direction he wants to take with Manchester United.”

It means that Mainoo’s contract should be sorted fairly soon after which Amad’s new deal will become a priority, which expires at the end of the season.

A young core of players waiting to be unleashed by a manager who loves unlocking potential is an exciting one and now the club needs to tie these players long-term.
