Manchester United interim head coach Michael Carrick has offered his two cents on England star Harry Maguire extending his future at Old Trafford beyond this season.

Harry Maguire put pen to paper at Manchester United over a new contract, with the former Red Devils skipper receiving a 12-month extension from the club.

The 33-year-old United centre-back would have been out of contract in the summer and speculation had mounted over whether or not the Red Devils would keep him.

United on Tuesday confirmed that Maguire will now remain at Old Trafford until 2027, with the Red Devils having the option to further extend his contract.

Why Michael Carrick wanted Man Utd and England defender Harry Maguire to stay at Old Trafford

Harry Maguire has enjoyed a key role in the Manchester United starting XI since Michael Carrick was appointed interim head coach by the Premier League club.

The former Man Utd captain has started in all 10 of Carrick’s Premier League matches so far and has deeply impressed with his turnaround in form.

Maguire’s success under Carrick has even led to the Red Devils centre-back climbing back into the England national team under Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Carrick praised the “experience” of Maguire and said that the England international has been “terrific” for him since his January appointment.

“Yeah, obviously, for so many different reasons,” he explained.

“We’re delighted that Harry’s agreed and it’s been done and I think stability and consistency [are] important.

“He’s been through everything at this club. He knows what it’s all about. The way he handles himself, his character and he’s been terrific since I’ve [come] back and credit to him for that, really.

“You know, and I think the experience is important. We got a really good mix within the squad of some really talented and high-end ability-wise, younger players.”

Michael Carrick on the role that a veteran defender like Harry Maguire can play for Man Utd

Red Devils interim boss Carrick admitted that Maguire is in the late stages of his career after the Man Utd defender turned 33 years old last month.

However, the 44-year-old United legend believes that Maguire’s contract extension will benefit other younger Red Devils players emerging around him at Old Trafford.

“We got a good number in what we kind of class as the peak years,” Carrick added.

“And Harry’s obviously at that stage where he is getting a little bit further down the line in terms of career, but it doesn’t diminish the importance of what he can be and the example and the understanding [he has].

“And a little bit of just knowing what it feels like to be here and so to have him around for longer is fantastic for all of us at the club.”

Maguire has made 20 appearances across all competitions for Man Utd in the 2025-26 campaign and has netted twice and registered one assist so far for his side.
