Ex-Manchester United target in ‘advanced’ talks to take major Arsenal job, bad news for Dan Ashworth

Manchester United have made a decision on Christopher Vivell’s future as the club as Ineos move on from following Dan Ashworth’s exit.

The first full season under Ineos has been a story of disappointment for Manchester United.

United fans have not been impressed with the product on the pitch under Erik ten Hag and now Ruben Amorim.

Off the pitch hasn’t been much better with Ineos announcing new redundancies just last week.

United’s finances are a big concern and Ineos have sparked concern due to the brief stint for sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Ashworth left United in December after just a matter of months in the job, sparking concerns about the Ineos plans.

Dan Ashworth set to miss out on Arsenal job

Ashworth was headhunted by Ineos for a top job in the United setup.

Yet mere months after his Old Trafford arrival, Ashworth was shown the door in a curious series of events.

Ashworth’s five-man manager wish list after sacking Ten Hag seemingly didn’t impress Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the decision was made to let him go.

Ashworth has joined Warwickshire County Cricket Club in an advisory role as he waits for his next opportunity in football.

There was real hope for Ashworth that he would be returning to the Premier League in the very near future.

Reports last week suggested that Ashworth was being eyed by Arsenal as the Gunners chase a new sporting director.

Ashworth knows Arsenal’s managing director Richard Garlick well but a reunion now seems to be unlikely.

Fabrizio Romano claims that Arsenal are now in ‘advanced’ negotiations to hire Andrea Berta rather than Ashworth.

The Italian has left Atletico Madrid and is now seemingly ready to join Arsenal in a big move for Mikel Arteta’s side.

That effectively shuts the door on Ashworth joining Arsenal unless the former United man targets a different role in their setup.

Ineos wanted Andrea Berta

The news is a blow for Ashworth but will have certainly caught the attention of Ineos too.

Reports in December suggested that United wanted to hire Berta to replace Ashworth having been impressed with his work with Atletico.

Berta was even targeted by United in 2023, so there has been real admiration for his work over the years.

United surely won’t be challenging Arsenal late in the day though.

Christopher Vivell has taken on a permanent role at United and will work closely with Jason Wilcox on the club’s transfer strategy moving forward.

United have clearly been impressed enough with Vivell to keep him around and will hope that he proves to be the right man in the long term as Berta nears a move to Arsenal.
