Although John O’Kane never made a first-team appearance for Manchester United, he knows that it would be a ‘stupid’ decision for a player to pick Tottenham Hotspur over a move to Old Trafford.
The transfer window is open, and Manchester United have yet to complete any deals. An agreement has been reached with Atalanta for Ederson, but that must wait until after the 2026 World Cup due to the midfielder’s late call-up to the Brazil side.
United have since made Mateus Fernandes a target, with the Portuguese talent reportedly making United his preference over other potential suitors.
There are hurdles in place in United’s quest to sign Fernandes, such as West Ham’s asking price, but Tottenham are also preparing a bid.

Man Utd may be in for a long transfer saga over Mateus Fernandes: What is the most INFURIATING/PAINFUL one you can recall?
Mateus Fernandes told it would be ‘stupid’ to sign for Tottenham over Man Utd
Nobody ever thought they would be writing this, but West Ham star Fernandes should take note of John O’Kane’s advice.
O’Kane is never shy of a rant. He’s also very passionate about United, but why wouldn’t he be, as a fan who came through the academy with the Class of ’92?
Baffled by the prospect of Fernandes signing for Tottenham instead of United this summer, O’Kane took to X, writing: “Being honest as a professional player if you pick playing for Spurs over a super global juggernaut like @ManUtd you’re pretty stupid no matter how much wage they offer you…”
After leaving United in 1998, O’Kane went on to play for Everton, Bolton Wanderers, Blackpool, and Hyde United.
O’Kane retired from playing football in 2006.

Man Utd have FINALLY acquired the land to build the new stadium – What is your reaction?
Why John O’Kane is right about Tottenham
All you need to do is look at the Premier League table from last season.
United are back in the Champions League after finishing third. The prospect of playing in Europe’s biggest competition next season outweighs anything Tottenham can offer.
Fernandes would also be joining a team very much on the up, granted Michael Carrick can keep getting positive results from the players this coming season.
It’s worth remembering how Spurs offered Brentford more money to sign Bryan Mbeumo, but the Cameroon star moved to Old Trafford last summer.
